Since Joseph Smith was a polygamist why did the Mormon church quit practicing what the prophet taught? —Y KnotThey never renounced the doctrine. Polygamy was discontinued in the LDS church because it was illegal to practice and the church lost its fight against the Edmunds–Tucker Act. 
Times have changed, though. I think the church's worst nightmare today would be if anti-polygamy laws were repealed. Then who's gonna tell Bednar he can't have a couple more wives? ;)
